Chickadee

Composed and Performed by Gretchen Sleicher

Lyrics

When the world weighs down upon my shoulders
And the only color I see is gray
I take myself out into the forest
And I listen for the chickadees
Yes I listen to the chickadees
Well I may be just a human imagining these things
But I swear those birds are happy as they call to each other on the wing
They say: Hello, my friend, I’m here, I can hear you over there in that tree
It’s a lovely day today, won’t you come and fly awhile with me?    singing
Chickadee chicka dee dee dee, chickdee chickadee dee dee (2x)
Well they say that early humans hunting on the African plain
Tuned their ears to the sound of the feathered ones
Who would tell them where to find the game
Our first words imitated them, we’ve always longed to have their flight
Their beauty and grace inspire us, their songs lift us into the light, singing
Chickadee chicka dee dee dee, chickdee chickadee dee dee (2x)
When I hear the whistle of those little ones, even if I’m feeling down and blue
A tender smile blooms within me as I listen to the chickadees
I’m so thankful for the chickadees
Well I may be just a human imagining these things
But I swear those birds are happy as they call to each other on the wing
They say: Hello, my friend, I’m here, I can hear you over there in that tree
It’s a lovely day today, won’t you come and fly awhile with me,    singing
Chickadee chicka dee dee dee, chickdee chickadee dee dee (2x)
    Chickadee chicka dee dee dee

Notes

The cheery chickadee inspires such tenderness! Did you know that human hearing is matched to the range of birdsong, perhaps evolved that way so our ancestors, out on the African plains, could find their way to the forests, where abundant food was waiting? Nowadays chickadee song is food for the soul, to cheer us up when we're blue.
